Good photos are crucial to a great painting! Especially if I can’t travel to meet your pets in person, so here are some photo tips that will make my job easier and ensure the best outcome of your portrait.

High quality prints or digital images are preferred. Poor quality photos will make capturing all the little details of your special pet very difficult to reproduce.

Well focused images are required. Blurry, fuzzy and badly lit photographs will be rejected.

Candid photos are best to capture your pet’s unique personality, however if you preferred a more posed set up, or an action shot, that is perfectly fine.

Several different photos of your pet are also helpful for me to get a better feel of your pet’s personality, coat coloring and any small markings that make your pet special.

If you are using an existing printed image, the smallest acceptable size is 5 x 7. Anything smaller causes detail to disappear. Digital images should be at least 180 dpi or larger.

Try to take your photos in bright but indirect light (please do not shoot at high noon) as this blows out the detail and washes out the color. Morning light is good and natural light is best.

Please be sure you have at least ONE photo (but more is better) where the color of coat and eyes is as accurate as possible.

Try to take some photos of your best friend doing what they love to do … playing with a ball, chasing a toy, carrying a stick, watching a bird. They may or may not be looking at the camera, our desire is to capture them at their relaxed and most captivating best.

Consider what is important to you about what you want your portrait to capture. Is it their dramatic eyes? Their goofy grin? Their sense of relaxed play? You know your pet better than anyone else in the world, and you help make my job easier and make the painting come to life when you can provide me with photos that reveal these aspects.

Have fun. Stay relaxed. Offer lots of treats. Keep it playful.

If the images you have are taken by a professional photographer, please be sure to get permission of use from the photographer as it is their intellectual property even if it is your pet.

If you don’t have reference photos and are local to me, we can arrange a meeting time and I will do a photo session with you. A service fee of $50.00 per hour including travel time will be charged.
